Tools for UPPSC Applications

UPPSC PCS Application Document Guide

The UPPSC PCS exam recruits for the most prestigious state cadre posts in Uttar Pradesh — Deputy Collector, Deputy SP, Block Development Officer, Treasury Officer, and dozens of other Class 1 and 2 services. The entire application happens on uppsc.up.nic.in. Document validation is automated and rigid — a 1 KB excess on photo size will block the upload.

1

Photograph preparation

Get a passport-style photograph against a plain white background. Face must be clearly visible — forehead to chin, both ears visible, eyes open and looking at the camera. Use the Photo Resize tool with the UPPSC preset to set exactly 180×216 px and compress between 20 KB and 50 KB.

2

Signature preparation

Sign on a plain white A4 sheet with a black or dark blue pen. Photograph or scan in bright light. Use the Signature Crop tool to crop tightly with a small white border, resize to 216×108 px, and compress between 10 KB and 30 KB. Avoid pen strokes touching the crop edges.

3

Certificate scanning and compression

For DAF (filled after Prelims), scan each certificate at 150 DPI in grayscale where possible. Keep each PDF under 200 KB. Use PDF Compress if any file is too large, or PDF Merge if a certificate has multiple pages.

UPPSC Photo Requirements — What the Portal Actually Checks

The uppsc.up.nic.in portal validates uploads in two stages: an automated check on dimensions, KB size, and format at upload time, and a manual check on background and clarity at document verification. Getting both right from the start avoids problems later.

What UPPSC Wants to See

  • Plain white or very light background — no patterns, no gradients
  • Face clearly visible — forehead to chin, both ears
  • Eyes open, looking directly into the camera
  • Neutral expression, mouth closed
  • Face fills 50–60% of the frame height
  • Recent photo (within 3 months of application)

What Gets Your Photo Rejected

  • Tinted glasses or sunglasses — always rejected
  • Blue, grey, or coloured background (use white)
  • Cap, hat, or face covering (religious headwear case-by-case)
  • Blurred, pixelated, or low-light image
  • File in PNG, HEIC, BMP — portal needs JPG
  • File under 20 KB or over 50 KB — portal blocks upload

Do's and Don'ts for UPPSC Photographs

Do's

  • DO use a plain white background — tape a white sheet to a wall if needed
  • DO take the photo in bright, even daylight without harsh shadows
  • DO look directly at the camera with a neutral expression
  • DO keep hair away from the face — tie it back if long
  • DO save the resized photo — you will need the same file for DAF, Mains, and Interview
  • DO print and keep a hard copy for document verification

Don'ts

  • DON'T use a studio's default blue background — UPPSC requires white
  • DON'T upload a WhatsApp-forwarded copy — it is already over-compressed
  • DON'T take a screenshot of your photo — screenshots are PNG, not JPG
  • DON'T wear sunglasses or tinted contact lenses
  • DON'T submit a photo older than 3 months — UPPSC may flag at DV
  • DON'T submit a file outside 20–50 KB — portal will silently refuse

Documents Required for UPPSC PCS DAF

After clearing UPPSC PCS Prelims, qualified candidates fill the DAF for the Mains examination. Prepare these in advance — the DAF window is short and the portal will not accept oversized PDFs.

Frequently Asked Questions — UPPSC Document Preparation

What is the exact photo size required for UPPSC PCS?
180 × 216 pixels, JPG/JPEG format, file size between 20 KB and 50 KB. Background must be plain white or light. The uppsc.up.nic.in portal validates dimensions strictly — anything off the spec is rejected without a specific error message.
What is the UPPSC signature image size?
216 × 108 pixels, JPG/JPEG, 10–30 KB. Sign in black or dark blue ink on plain white paper, scan or photograph in bright light, then crop tightly with a small white border around the signature.
Do RO/ARO and Lower Subordinate use the same photo specs?
Yes — every major UPPSC exam (PCS, RO/ARO, Lower Subordinate Services, PCS-J, Combined State Engineering, Medical Officer, Block Development Officer) uses the same 180×216 photo and 216×108 signature spec. One properly resized file works for every UPPSC application in the same cycle.
My upload keeps failing — what should I check?
Check in this order: (1) exact 180×216 pixel dimensions, (2) JPG format only — not PNG/HEIC, (3) file size between 20 KB and 50 KB, (4) plain white background, (5) face fills 50–60% of the frame. UPPSC does not display a specific error — the Next button simply stays disabled.
What documents do I need for the UPPSC DAF?
Passport photo (180×216), signature (216×108), 10th and 12th certificates, Degree certificate, Aadhar Card, UP domicile certificate (for state quota), OBC/SC/ST certificate from a competent UP authority, OBC non-creamy layer certificate (current year), and EWS/PH/freedom fighter dependant certificates if claimed. Keep each PDF under 200 KB.
Is a UP domicile mandatory for UPPSC PCS?
For posts with UP-specific reservation, a domicile certificate from the competent UP authority is required at document verification. Candidates from other states can still apply under the open category but without UP-specific reservation benefits (OBC NCL, SC/ST quotas tied to UP). Always read the specific notification.
