SSC GD application is filled entirely online at ssc.nic.in in a single window — typically 4 to 6 weeks per cycle. Photo and signature upload happens at the registration stage; you cannot proceed without clearing both validations. With around 30 lakh applications per cycle, the portal is heavily-loaded in the final 48 hours — apply earlier to avoid timeouts.
One-time registration (OTR)
If you have not registered with SSC before, complete the OTR first. Provide email, mobile number, Aadhar, basic details. This becomes your SSC account for all future SSC exams (CGL, CHSL, MTS, JE, etc.).
Photograph preparation
Get a passport-size colour photograph on white background — within 3 months of applying. Use the Photo Resize tool with the SSC GD preset to set exactly 200×230 px and compress to between 20 KB and 50 KB. Use the same photo at the physical efficiency test, medical examination, and document verification stages.
Signature preparation
Sign on plain white paper with a black or blue pen. Scan or photograph in bright light. Use the Signature Crop tool to crop tightly to 140×60 px and compress to 10–20 KB. The signature in your application must match exactly at every later verification stage.
Post preference and category
Select your force preference (BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, AR, SSF, NIA) in order. Mark category (UR, OBC, SC, ST, EWS). For Ex-Serviceman, PH (Persons with Disability), and dependant of freedom fighter — submit relevant certificates at DV stage.
Pay fee and submit
Application fee is ₹100 for General/OBC (Women, SC, ST, PH, Ex-Serviceman are exempt). Pay via SBI Challan, Net Banking, UPI, or Card. Download and save the submitted PDF — keep it for your records.
SSC GD Photo Requirements — What the Portal Actually Checks
ssc.nic.in validates uploads at two stages: an automated check on dimensions, KB size and format at upload, and a manual check on clarity and background at document verification. Reject at either stage and you lose the cycle.
What SSC Wants to See
- ✓ Plain white or very light background
- ✓ Face fills 70–80% of frame height — passport style
- ✓ Both ears clearly visible
- ✓ Eyes open, looking straight at the camera
- ✓ Recent — within 3 months of application
- ✓ Colour photo only — black & white rejected
What Gets Your Photo Rejected
- ✗ Cap, hat, or face covering — religious headwear case-by-case
- ✗ Spectacles — SSC GD typically asks no glasses
- ✗ Shadow on face or background
- ✗ Blue, grey, or coloured background
- ✗ File in PNG, HEIC, BMP — must be JPG
- ✗ File under 20 KB or over 50 KB
Do's and Don'ts for SSC GD Photographs
Do's
- DO use a white background — tell the studio "for government recruitment"
- DO take the photo in good daylight without harsh shadows
- DO face directly at the camera with a neutral expression
- DO tie back long hair so both ears are visible
- DO save 4–6 hard copy prints — needed at PET/PST and DV stages
- DO use the same photo for every SSC exam in the cycle (CGL, CHSL, GD, MTS)
Don'ts
- DON'T use a WhatsApp-forwarded photo — already over-compressed
- DON'T use a selfie or casual shot — SSC flags these at medical
- DON'T submit a black-and-white photo — rejected outright
- DON'T wear sunglasses or tinted contact lenses
- DON'T submit a photo older than 3 months
- DON'T submit a file outside 20–50 KB — portal blocks the Next button
Documents Required for SSC GD Verification
After clearing the Computer Based Test (CBT), Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST), shortlisted candidates appear for Document Verification (DV). Prepare these well in advance — DV happens in regional offices and missed dates are typically not rescheduled.
Check your age eligibility before applying
SSC GD age is 18–23 years. Relaxation: OBC +3, SC/ST +5, Ex-Servicemen +3 after deducting service period.
