Age Relaxation Rules for Central Government Exams

Age relaxation is given on top of the upper age limit for General category. Below are the standard relaxations for central government recruitment (SSC, UPSC, Railways, IBPS, SBI). State PSC exams like APPSC, TSPSC, TNPSC, and MPSC may have different, often more generous, relaxations.

+3 yrs

OBC (Other Backward Classes) — Non Creamy Layer

Applicable for central government exams. Must hold a valid OBC NCL certificate issued within the last year. State OBC certificates may not be valid for central exams — check the notification carefully.

+5 yrs

SC / ST (Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe)

5 years relaxation above the upper age limit. SC/ST candidates also get unlimited UPSC attempts (vs 6 for General) until they hit the age limit. Caste certificate must be from the competent authority.

+10 yrs

PH / PwD (Persons with Disabilities)

10 years additional relaxation over and above the category relaxation. A PH candidate from OBC category gets 10+3 = 13 years relaxation. A PH candidate from SC/ST gets 10+5 = 15 years relaxation. Disability certificate from SADAREM or equivalent is required.

Varies

Ex-Serviceman (ESM)

Relaxation equal to the period of military service plus 3 years. For Group C posts, there is often no upper age limit for ESM candidates. Discharge Certificate from the Defence Ministry is required. Rules vary significantly between exams — always check the official notification.

+5 yrs

J&K Domicile Candidates

Candidates who have ordinarily been domiciled in Jammu & Kashmir during the period from 1 January 1980 to 31 December 1989 get 5 years relaxation in central government exams. Applicable regardless of category.

How to Check Age Eligibility for a Government Exam

1

Find the official notification

Download the official notification from the exam body's website — ssc.gov.in for SSC, upsc.gov.in for UPSC, ibps.in for IBPS, indianrailways.gov.in for Railways. Look for the section titled "Age Limit" or "Eligibility Criteria."

2

Note the cutoff date — not today's date

Every notification specifies the date as of which your age is calculated — typically worded as "Age reckoned as on 01/01/2025" or "Candidates must not have been born before/after...". This cutoff date is usually 1 January or 1 August of the exam year. Use this date, not today's date, in the calculator above.

3

Enter your DOB and the cutoff date in the calculator

Enter your date of birth from your 10th Marks Sheet or Birth Certificate. The date on your Aadhar card may differ from official records — always use the DOB on your SSC/SSLC certificate, as that is what the commission accepts as proof.

4

Select your exam and check eligibility with relaxation

Select the exam from the dropdown. The calculator shows whether you are eligible under General, OBC, SC/ST, and PH categories so you can immediately see if you qualify — and under which category. If you fall just outside the General limit, you may still be eligible under relaxation categories.

Exam-wise Age Limit Details

SSC SSC CGL and CHSL Age Limits

SSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level) has an age limit of 18–32 years for most posts, though some posts like Assistant Audit Officer have a higher upper limit of 30 years and some like Tax Assistant cap at 27 years. The cutoff date for SSC exams is typically 1 January of the application year. SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) caps at 27 years for General. SSC MTS (Multi Tasking Staff) has an 18–25 age band for General category. SSC Stenographer Grade C and D: 18–30 years for General. Always check the post-specific age limits in the detailed notification since SSC often lists multiple age brackets for different posts within the same exam.

UPSC UPSC Civil Services Age Limit and Attempts

UPSC Civil Services (IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, etc.) has one of the more complex age eligibility structures. The minimum age is 21 years, and the upper limit is 32 for General with 6 attempts permitted. OBC: up to 35 years with 9 attempts. SC/ST: up to 37 years with unlimited attempts. PwD candidates get 10 additional years and are exempt from the attempt limit. Age is reckoned as on 1 August of the exam year. For UPSC NDA: 16.5–19.5 years (only for unmarried male candidates; female candidates are also eligible from 2024). For UPSC CDS: 19–25 years depending on the service. Always use the UPSC notification's specific date as the cutoff — not 1 January.

Banking IBPS PO, Clerk, SBI PO Age Limits

Banking exams conducted by IBPS and SBI have tighter age windows than most central government exams. IBPS PO: 20–30 years. IBPS Clerk: 20–28 years. IBPS RRB Officer Scale I: 18–30 years. IBPS RRB Office Assistant: 18–28 years. SBI PO: 21–30 years. SBI Clerk: 20–28 years. SBI SO: Varies by specialization, typically 25–35 years. The standard OBC relaxation of 3 years and SC/ST relaxation of 5 years applies. Age is reckoned as on the first of the month in which the notification is released. Banking exams tend to have strict cutoff dates and do not offer as many relaxation categories as central government exams.

Railways RRB NTPC, Group D, ALP Age Limits

Indian Railways recruitment through RRB (Railway Recruitment Board) is among the largest in India. RRB NTPC: 18–33 years for General across most posts. RRB Group D: 18–33 years. RRB ALP (Assistant Loco Pilot): 18–33 years. RRB JE (Junior Engineer): 18–33 years. Ex-Serviceman candidates get significant relaxation — for Group D, the upper limit is relaxed by military service period plus 3 years. The cutoff date varies by notification — Railway exams have released notifications with 1 July as the cutoff in some cycles. Always download the Railway notification from indianrailways.gov.in and note the specific cutoff date.

State PSC APPSC, TSPSC, TNPSC, MPSC Age Limits

State PSC exams generally have more generous upper age limits than central exams, particularly for local residents. APPSC Group 1: 18–42 years for General, with higher limits for local candidates in some posts. TSPSC Group 1: 18–44 years for General — among the more generous in India. TNPSC Group 2: 18–32 for most posts, but SC/ST candidates from Tamil Nadu get exemption from the upper age limit for some posts (no upper age limit at all). MPSC Rajyaseva: 19–38 for Open Category (Maharashtra Open). KPSC: 21–35 for General. State exams also offer relaxation for local residents, widows, divorcees, sportspersons, government servants, and NCC holders — categories not usually available in central exams. Check the state-specific notification carefully as rules differ significantly between states.

Always use your SSC / 10th Marks Sheet DOB — not Aadhar

Government commissions accept the date of birth on your SSC / SSLC / 10th Marks Memo as the primary proof. If your Aadhar or birth certificate shows a different date, it creates problems during document verification. Use the DOB exactly as printed on your 10th marks sheet when filling applications and when using this calculator.

Prepare Your Application Documents

Once you've confirmed your age eligibility, make sure your photo and signature meet the exact specifications required by the exam portal.
