Tools for SSC Applications

SSC CGL Photo Upload Guide — Avoid Rejection

SSC CGL receives millions of applications every cycle. Portal errors and photo rejections are extremely common. Here is exactly what you need to do to get your photo right the first time.

1

Take or select a suitable photo

Studio photo is ideal but a phone photo works if the background is plain white or very light. Face must be clearly visible with eyes open. No hat, no sunglasses. Recent photo — within 6 months of the notification date. Formal clothing recommended.

2

Resize to exactly 280×340px

Open our Photo Resize tool. Upload your photo. Set width 280, height 340. Adjust quality so the file is under 100KB — for most SSC portal uploads, 60–70% JPEG quality achieves this. Save as JPG. Do not rename from .jpg to something else.

3

Prepare your signature image

Sign your name clearly on plain white paper. Scan or photograph with good lighting. Open Signature Crop, upload the image, crop tightly, resize to 140×60px, and compress under 30KB. Important: the signature you upload must match what you sign on the OMR sheet during the exam.

4

Upload on ssc.nic.in before the deadline

The SSC portal gets very heavy traffic near the last date. Complete your application at least 3–4 days early. If you face upload errors, try using Google Chrome in incognito mode. Do not use Internet Explorer or very old browsers.

Common SSC Portal Errors and Fixes

"Invalid file format" when uploading photo

Your photo is not in JPG format. Screenshots saved as PNG, photos from WhatsApp saved as WebP, and HEIC photos from iPhones all cause this. Open the file in Paint (Windows) or Preview (Mac), select Save As, and choose JPEG format. Or use our Photo Resize tool — it always outputs proper JPG.

"File size exceeds limit" for a photo that seems small

The portal checks actual file size in bytes, not what Windows shows. A photo can show as 97KB in Windows Explorer but be slightly over 100KB in actual bytes (binary vs decimal measurement). Keep your photo under 95KB to have a safe buffer. Our resize tool shows exact file size.

Page keeps loading or photo preview doesn't appear

This is usually a browser or internet issue during high traffic. Clear browser cache, switch to Chrome if you're on another browser, or try uploading in a different network (switch from WiFi to mobile data or vice versa). SSC portal loads are highest in the final 2 days before deadline — apply early.

OTP not received during SSC registration

Check if your number is registered for DND (Do Not Disturb). SSC uses SMS OTPs that may be blocked by DND services. If the SMS doesn't arrive, wait 2 minutes and click Resend OTP. If it still doesn't come, try with a different mobile number (a family member's number works for this step).
